The same way that sentences have a hierarchical syntactic structure, they also have a hierarchical prosodic structure, made up of prosodic constituents. After an introduction to the intonation (or speech melody) of English sentences, this seminar introduces and motivates the different prosodic constituents. At the word level we find syllables and feet, which are responsible for stress and rhythm in words. At the sentential level we find prosodic words, prosodic phrases and intonation phrases, which are responsible for stress, rhythm and the shape of tunes (whole intonational units). Further topics to be discussed are:
1. the correspondence between morphosyntactic constituents (e.g. N, NP, clauses) and prosodic constituents 2. how intonation can be modelled in the grammar 3. how intonation encodes the information structure of sentences (e.g. new and old information) 4. similarities and differences in the prosodic structure of English and German
