The Swedish Academy awarded Kazuo Ishiguro the Nobel Prize for literature because he, “in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world”. This judgement entails significant presuppositions about what ‘literature’ is and how ‘our’ relation to the ‘world’ is conceived. This seminar sets out to explore four of Ishiguro’s novels together with his self-fashioning as an author in the context of the politics of literary awards and prizes in order to shed light on the function and relevance of the novel today.
