Kommentar |
After the Civil War (1861-65), an accelerated process of modernization transforms American society and calls into question traditional ideas about class and status, money and morals, love, sex and the marriage market. How do writers in the Gilded Age (1865-1901) react to social change? This course offers sociological readings of two classics of American Realism and Naturalism, Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady (1881) and Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie (1900). Please buy the Oxford World's Classic Edition of Henry James and the Penguin Classics Edition of Theodore Dreiser. Other editions may reprint substantially different versions of these novels.
