Britain's decision to leave the EU has been the subject of several books in recent months, published by leading economists and political scientists. Their focus is generally on aspects like the costs of BREXIT, the viability of new bilateral trade agreements, legal matters and questions of representation. This course will introduce students to these debates and help them understand ongoing developments from a cultural studies perspective: Why did people vote to leave, which factors influence public opinion, and how are Remainers reacting to the rhetoric of independence? Using concepts such as "imagined communities" (Benedict Anderson) and premediation/remediation (Richard Grusin), we will analyse a wide range of representations including a monodrama series commissioned by The Guardian, documentaries, poetry and music, as well as extracts from fictional texts.
