Until this day, the First World War occupies a dominant position in Australia’s cultural memory. Interestingly, in contrast to other nations, in the Australian public the Great War is not remembered as the biggest catastrophe in modern history, but as a significant contribution to the birth of the Australian nation. In this literary studies seminar we will focus on how literary texts from different genres (poetry, drama, prose fiction) represent the Great War and in how far they support or contest dominant public versions of the war. In this context, next to exemplary close readings of texts such as Alan Seymour’s The One Day of the Year or Sydney Tomholt’s The Last Post, we will also take a look at relevant cultural contexts that factor into the depiction of the Great War as a national myth.
