Since 1977 the University of Wuppertal has been the home of the Walter Macken Papers. Walter Macken wrote plays in a time considered the 'Dark Age' of Irish theatre (1940ies and 1950ies), wherefore his (unpublished) plays are largely underresearched. With the Macken Papers at hand, the University of Wuppertal has a special interest in rediscovering this writer.
This course addresses students of literary studies who are interested in working with archival material as well as students of Editions- und Dokumentwissenschaft with an interest in Irish Studies. It will provide a unique insight into untouched archival material.
We will approach Walter Macken's dramatic oeuvre: his 4 published plays as well as the unpublished dramatic texts and supplementary material from the Macken Archive. Students of Literary Studies will focus on questions such as the socio-political as well as the literary context of Irish drama in Macken's time and the representation of Irish identities in Macken's plays, while students of Editions- und Dokumentwissenschaft will develop concepts to edit the material in the archive.
