This seminar investigates the relationship between social reality and novelistic discourse, offering sociological readings of two major Victorian novels, Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights (1847) and Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891). We will explore how historical events are fictionalized in the Victorian novel, how processes of modernization are evaluated, and how conflicts between classes, cultures and the sexes are "negotiated" (Stephen Greenblatt) in the text. In class, I will refer extensively to the Penguin Classics Edition of Emily Brontë and the Oxford World's Classics Edition of Thomas Hardy. If you use other editions, it will be difficult to follow and to participate in discussions.
