In October 2017, the Canadian author Margaret Atwood was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. When explaining their choice, the Board of Trustees especially emphasized the socio-political relevance of Atwood’s work, which exhibits "a keen political intuition and a deeply perceptive ability to detect dangerous and underlying developments and tendencies" in our contemporary world.[1] In this seminar, we will explore the various political, social, ethical, and ecological issues Atwood addresses in her speculative fictions by particularly focusing on themes such as totalitarianism, gender discrimination, bio-engineering, and anthropogenic climate change. Reading Atwood's novels The Handmaid's Tale (1985) and Oryx and Crake (2003) as examples of the dystopian genre, we will discuss how narrative fiction may serve not only as a model of, but also as a model for reality (Brian McHale). To do so, we will analyze and interpret both narratives from different theoretical perspectives, including, among others, genre theory, narratology, gender studies, and ecocriticism.
