Since the rise of film studies as an academic discipline, Alfred Hitchcock's films have always been a testing ground for new approaches in film criticism, ranging from auteurism and structuralism to psychoanalysis and gender studies. This seminar offers an introduction to the popular "master of suspense", but also to film studies in general, focusing on different ways of "reading" a film. Since this is a two-hour seminar, it will not be possible to show these films in class. There will be generous selections from The 39 Steps (1935), Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1957), North by Northwest (1959) and Psycho (1960), but students are expected to have seen these films before we discuss them in class, no matter if on TV, in a cinema, on video, DVD, Blu-ray or the Internet. Critical essays on Hitchcock and film in general will be made available on Moodle.
