This is a seminar for MEd- and MA-students only.
The most prominent type of conditional sentences are those sentences that contain a subordinate clause introduced by if in English. Examples of other, less prominent types are those where the subordinate clause is introduced by other expressions (e.g. unless) or where its interpretation as a clause of condition is signalled syntactically by inversion (e.g. Had you been there, you wouldn't have missed it). In this seminar, we will be studying grammatical descriptions of conditional sentences in English, occasionally comparing them to German. The greater part of the seminar will be concerned with semantic and pragmatic issues raised by conditional sentences.
