This course tracks the main syntactic changes from Old English to Middle English. The first part of the seminar is devoted to descriptive overviews of the most important features of the syntax of Old English and Middle English, such as word order in main and subordinate clauses, word order within noun phrases, types of subordinate clauses (finite and non-finite complement as well as relative clauses), the expression of negation, to name a few. We will see that Old English shares many aspects with German, while late Middle English already exhibits the basic syntax of present-day English.
After the overview we will zoom in on a selection of syntactic phenomena and discuss them in more detail, particularly, the Verb-Second property (shared with German) and its loss, the change from object-verb to verb-object order and developments in infinitival constructions.
Registration: Via "Elektronisches Vorlesungsverzeichnis" alias "WUSEL" during the registration period for the "Anglistik/Amerikanistik" department.
