In this course, we will focus on keeping up with current affairs from the perspective of - mainly but not exclusively - English-language quality newspapers (broadsheets). You will both acquire and learn about a wide range of relevant language not only used when speaking about current affairs but also used in a broad variety of discourses. We will devote a certain amount of time to comparing the language of tabloids with that of quality newspapers, reflecting and analysing the reasons behind different semantic choices and their effects. Since the course is designed to give you multiple opportunities to speak and improve your oral English, it will be necessary that you prepare topics on a weekly basis for discussion or debate in class.
Registration: Via WUSEL during the official registration period.
First Meeting: Please note that if you do not attend the first meeting and do not inform the instructor beforehand, you will lose your right to a place in the course.
