This seminar traces Henry James's early career from The American (1877) and Daisy Miller (1878) to his first undisputed masterpiece, The Portrait of a Lady (1881), analysing the development of his distinctive style as well as his qualities as a social novelist. How is the clash of cultures between America and Europe depicted? What do we learn about classes, gender roles, morals and manners in the 19th century? And how are social conflicts processed in the individual's mind? Please buy the Oxford World's Classics edition of The American and The Portrait of a Lady. Other editions may reprint substantially different versions of these novels. Daisy Miller is included in the Norton Anthology of American Literature.
