Since the publication of Sam Selvon’s ground-breaking novel The Lonely Londoners (1956), immigration, life in diasporic communities and the feeling of unbelonging have been major themes in British writing. Multicultural “fictions of migration” (Sommer 2001) have been studied from semiotic, narratological, generic, and ideological perspectives. Black British Studies, influenced by Stuart Hall and other pioneers, is now a well-established field which covers a wide spectrum of issues, ranging from identity politics to Black aesthetics. The seminar will introduce students to basic elements of narrative design, key concepts in Black literature studies, and cross-cultural ways of reading.
We will read Nadeem Aslam’s Maps for lost Lovers (2004), Bernadine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other (2019) as well as a selection of essays from Zadie Smith’s collection Feel Free (2018). Please note that we will use print editions (no e-books!).

Bemerkung |
The seminar will be a phone-free space; using cases provided by Yondr, we will create an environment that helps us focus on fiction, theory and the art of reading (https://www.overyondr.com/).
