Britain has been accused of “national amnesia” regarding its role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade (cf. Wallace 2006, Hirsch 2018). The airing of the award-winning documentary on BBC by David Olusoga, entitled Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners (2015), re-ignited this discussion in the British mainstream. This seminar explores representations of slavery in selected Neo-Slave narratives by Black British writers and film-makers and pays special attention to how Britain’s role in the slave trade is constructed in these narratives. Specifically, the seminar explores the intersection of content and formal aspects by focussing on the role that generic conventions and media-specific affordances play in representing a given version of the slave narrative.
