This seminar is part of the new module Bilingualer Sachunterricht in der Grundschule which gives students who intend to become primary school teachers a unique chance to develop a profile in teaching science bilingually. More and more primary schools establish a bilingual branch and are therefore in search of qualified teachers.
The whole module consists of two courses. You attend one TEFL course and one course in Sachunterricht. In the end you will conduct a project which covers topics from both courses.
In the first part of this course we will discuss the chances and challenges of bilingual education and deal with theoretical aspects (e.g. different concepts, the development of the bilingual mental lexicon). We will take a close look at the general relationship between content and language learning, the specific language of science lessons and critically elaborate on the role of the first language in the classroom. In the second part of the seminar students will get familiar with specific methods in bilingual teaching and learn how to plan and analyze bilingual science lessons by taking into consideration the theoretical aspects discussed before.
For this module BA- students need to attend the course “Einführung in die Didaktik des inklusiven Sachunterrichts.“ After successfully completing both courses, students will receive an extra certificate.
