Everyone seems to agree that fiction matters, but why? And how? To whom? What are the ”limits of critique” (Rita Felski)? In the attention economy, literature as food for thought has to compete with ”comfort food”, the fast reading afforded by digital media and social networks, technologies which are changing the ways we perceive both reality and representations of reality. This lecture explores current concepts of fictionality, experientiality, performativity, agency, hermeneutics and narrative design which pave the way for ideological, symptomatic, analytical and postcritical approaches to literature, and shape the art of reading in the 21st century.
