In order to become a competent language user it is necessary to be able to read and write texts in English. In primary school a secondary emphasis is placed on the development of written skills though. It is argued that because of the complexity of the English orthography learners might be overtaxed. In this course we will take a close look at the English language system, literacy development in German and English and the challenges of learning to read and write in English as a foreign language. On this basis you will be introduced to different teaching approaches and practical examples to help learners make sense of written texts and to express their own ideas in English.
The focus will be on topics related to teaching English in primary school. For this reason especially students who intend to become primary school teachers are welcome in this class.
Students participating in this course are welcome to conduct their research study (Forschungsprojekt M-ENG 4, Komponente b, 3 LP) with me. Further information will be provided in our first session.
