From Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to Ian Mc Ewan’s Machines Like Me, the idea of creating artificial life seems not to have lost any of its enticing yet horrifying fascination. From then till now, fiction-writers have reminded us of the moral implications of the ability to create life. Yet, in between those two works of fiction a range of significant shifts have taken place concerning the ways in which we imagine this process of creation, its product and purpose. In this course, we will explore the motif across time and genres, be it drama, prose or poetry. In addition to reading fiction, we will also consult theoretical texts on the concept of posthumanism and on the representation on artificial life from the field of psychoanalysis.

Take note that this is not a course for slow readers! Students are strongly advised to purchase and prepare the longer texts that will be discussed in the seminar already during the semester break. The titles concerned are:
