This course provides an overview of the most important aspects of Old English syntax. Topics to be discussed are:
- word order and the structure of main and subordinate clauses
- word order and the structure of noun phrases
- finite and non-finite complementation
- relative clauses
- the expression of negation
- periphrastic verb constructions (modals, the progressive, the passive and the perfect)
We will also address those aspects which underwent considerable change or which were lost in the transition to Middle English, for example the change from object-verb to verb-object order. We will see that Old English syntax shares many aspects with German, while Middle English already exhibits the main syntactic traits of present-day English. For this reason, comparison with German and present-day English are an important part of our class discussion.
