This is a seminar for BA-students only.
Copular sentences are sentences whose main verb is the so-called copula, i.e. be in English or sein in German, for example. These raise a number of interesting syntactic and semantic questions, both when looking at them in only one language and when looking at them cross-linguistically. For example, the meaning or function of the copula seems to be different in the following sentences:
The morning star is the evening star.
Mary is a professor of linguistics.
Our professor of linguistics is Mary Smith.
Or consider the person and number contrast of the copula displayed by the following sentence pairs:
The problem is the adults. / Das Problem sind die Erwachsenen.
The driver of the red car is me. / Der Fahrer des roten Autos bin ich.
We will be reading and discussing articles and book chapters that explain what the questions or problems raised by copular sentences are and propose (attempts at) answers or solutions to them.
Successful participation presupposes an interest in and a some knowledge of the things taught in GLS Syntax and Semantics.
