This is a seminar for MEd- and MA-students only.
Linguistic relativity is the hypothesis that differences in the grammatical structures and in the vocabularies of different languages cause their speakers to think differently. It is the idea that is also known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and that is commonly distinguished from the stronger hypothesis of linguistic determinism, according to which linguistic structures determine thought. In this seminar, we will devote the first two or three sessions to a discussion of some texts and text extracts from the work of Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf that is foundational for linguistic relativism. For the greatest part of the seminar we will then turn to discussions of some (very) recent work that claims to support linguistic relativism. As a counterpoint to this literature the seminar participants will be made familiar with Steven Pinker's critical view of linguistic relativism as expressed in his 2007 book The stuff of thought.
