Digital change challenges foreign language teachers to reevaluate and reconceptualize the opportunities of teaching English in the digital world (Lütge, Merse & Su, 2019). Debates about the characteristics of digitally competent teachers, discussions on the ways of integrating digital devices into language lessons, as well as considerations of improving pupils’ digital competences have been widely discussed in the foreign language discourse and found their way into numerous official documents and frameworks (e.g. The European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators or Bildung in der digitalen Welt: Strategie der Kultusministerkonferenz). Given the fast progress in technology development, current trends in digital learning tend to change rapidly. How can English language teaching and learning be supported by the use of new media?

This course allows students to explore the potential and implementation of various kinds of new media technologies for the purpose of foreign language teaching and learning. In order to provide a pedagogical framework for new media in ELT, the seminar starts with an examination of official documents on digital teaching and learning, discussion of multimedia learning principles, and models of technology assessment. In the following part, students are encouraged to explore various technologies that might be used in a foreign language classroom, such as AR, VR, or 360-degree photos and videos. Numerous approaches to digital teaching and learning are going to be discussed as well, for instance CALL, game-based learning or blended learning. Finally, we are going to analyze chosen digital tools that are often being used by German EFL school-age learners.
