Educating children and adolescents to contribute to the realization of the United Nations’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) is without doubt one of the most challenging tasks facing schools in the 21st century. Current syllabi in NRW have made the education for sustainable development and for global citizenship a compulsory part of schooling. Thus, all teachers are obliged to reflect upon the contribution their subjects may make to the 17 SDGs.
To prepare future teachers of English for this new challenge, this class offers theoretical discussion and practical guidance to explore the interaction specifically between TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and CLIL/Bilingual Education (Content and Language Integrated Learning) on the one hand and education for sustainable development on the other. Students will be encouraged to connect theory with practice, and to design innovative teaching ideas and materials based on an SDG of their own choice.
In addition, students are given the opportunity to adopt the teacher’s role and teach young adults participating in classes for international learners of English. These lessons are conducted in cooperation with the Sprachlehrinstitut (SLI) and a PETE tutor. Students participating in this project are welcome to conduct their research study (Forschungsprojekt) with me. If you would like to participate in the tutorial, please contact the tutor under ppete@uni-wuppertal.de
