In today´s globalized world, bi- and multilingual education has become more and more popular and essential. The KMK recommends any pupil graduating from school to be able to speak at least two foreign modern languages (KMK, 2011).
Hence, this course aims at exploring different approaches to bilingual teaching and integrating languages in subject teaching, as well as examining the potential of bilingual instruction techniques.
First, students will get familiar with different approaches to language acquisition and bilingual education and we will take a closer look at research findings, theories and current developments in Germany and around the globe.
Second, we will examine the potential of bilingual instruction. Topical data and practical approaches will be discussed and reflected upon.
In the last part of this seminar, students will be asked to deal with practical implications for planning and teaching bilingually. Therefore, the advantages and disadvantages of different models of bilingual education and instruction are discussed and recent data will be questioned reasonably. Furthermore, students are asked to examine the actual mode of teaching bilingually and compare it with aspects of curricula and the material currently available for schools. Therefore, own lessons will be planned in small groups and held to the course.
