Picturebooks, Comics and Young Adult Fiction in the EFL Classroom - Einzelansicht

In this seminar, we will look at the many potentials of using authentic picturebooks, comics and (multimodal) young adult fiction in English lessons at primary level and in the early years of English teaching at secondary schools. We will consider how picturebooks and comics work (Cameron, 2001; Heim, 2013; McCloud, 1993; Nikolajeva & Scott, 2001) and will focus on current research on reading with young learners (e.g. Reckermann, 2018). Also, we will discuss aims as well as methodological aspects in connection with the usage of authentic children’s books & young adult fiction (Alter & Frisch, 2018; Council of Europe, 2016; Diehr & Surkamp, 2015; MSW, 2008; Sipe, 2008). While authentic fiction bears the potential to support the development of all modes of communication, i.e. reception, production, interaction and mediation, we will use current curricula & guidelines (e.g.Council of Europe, 2016, 2018; MSW, 2008) in order to choose main aims for lesson ideas that we develop in a hands-on phase of the course. The selection of picturebooks, comics and young adult fiction will be discussed in the course of the seminar.
