Throughout the twentieth century Ireland’s national identity was subject to constant renegotiations. Ireland’s successful pursuit of independence and the resulting conflicts such as the question of a partitioned Ireland shaped the question of national identity in this century.
In this course we will discuss how Irish identity is represented in Irish drama beginning with the opening of the Abbey Theatre and G.B. Shaw’s and Lady Gregory's Cathleen Ni Houlihan in 1903. We will cover plays by influential twentieth-century Irish playwrights such as J.M. Synge, Bernard Shaw, Sean O‘Casey and Brian Friel and how they negotiate Irishness but also by writers who have only recently been rediscovered. Furthermore, we will deal with the question of canon formation and explore how the canon of Irish drama has recently been questioned and reshaped.
