In American studies, the "frontier" is a term for the borderland between white settlements and Native American territory. In fiction and film, the "frontier" became the mythical setting of innumerable Westerns, often with a hero as a mediator between the two cultures. The structure of the Western – two cultures in contact, the hero as mediator – can also be detected in British colonial literature such as Rudyard Kipling's Kim (1901) or T. E. Lawrence's The Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1926). In this course, we will read James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans (1826), set in colonial America and the most famous of Cooper's "Leatherstocking tales", Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899), which takes us to the Belgian Congo but also reflects on British imperialism, and E. M. Forster's A Passage to India (1924), set in the most profitable colony of the British Empire at the beginning of the 20th century.

unbenotete Studienleistung (2LP): intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der von der Lehrperson benannten Primär- und Sekundärliteratur, nachgewiesen durch aktive und regelmäßige Mitarbeit in der Lehrveranstaltung und Moodle-Forumsbeiträge oder durch von der Lehrperson festzulegende Ersatzleistungen wie z.B. Klausur oder mündliche Prüfung.
Leistungsbescheinigung: Abhängig von der Prüfungsordnung und der zu erwerbenden Anzahl der Leistungspunkte zusätzlich eine Auswahl aus den folgenden Leistungsnachweisen: Referat, Exzerpt, Mitarbeit in einem Expertenteam, Lexikonartikel, wissenschaftliche Hausarbeit. |
