Semantics is a branch of linguistics and a component of a modular theory of grammar. The semantics module assigns an interpretation or “meaning” to structures provided above all by the syntax module. The goals of this part of the fundamentals course include the development of a more precise understanding of meaning, a grasp of the methods used for specifying lexical meaning, and an acquaintance with compositional procedures applied to build complex interpretations. This is a course in the fundamentals of semantics in which emphasis is placed on the acquisition of the ability to understand and use the relevant terminology and simple techniques for describing meaning.

Registration: Via WUSEL during the official registration period of the department.

Will be provided in the university library and/or in Moodle.

It is highly recommended that students first complete ”Introduction to Linguistics”.
