This is a seminar for BA-students only.
Lexeme formation (also called word formation) is commonly considered to be the part of linguistic morphology that is predominantly concerned with derivation, compounding and conversion. The notion 'word-based' in the context of morphology refers to approaches in which not the morpheme, but the non-complex lexeme is considered to be the smallest meaning-bearing unit, and in which lexemes are the units that instantiate morphological patterns. In the first part of this seminar, students will be introduced to a specific version of a word-based approach to lexeme formation, namely construction morphology, on the basis of chapters 1-3 and 10 of Booij 2010 (see "Literatur" below). The second part of the seminar is devoted to the discussion of several studies on comparative English/German lexeme formation and to a discussion of how a word-based approach can be profitably employed for comparative analyses in the field of lexeme formation.
