The course deals with principles and examples of language change in the areas of phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. The examples will be mainly drawn from various stages of the history of English. We'll especially address those aspects which underwent considerable change or which were lost in the transition from Old to Middle English, for example the change from object-verb to verb-object order. We will see that Old English grammar shares many aspects with German, while Middle English already exhibits the main traits of present-day English. For this reason, the comparison of earlier stages of German and English are also an important part of our class discussion.
