Kommentar

The seminar traces the transnational development of the sublime from its roots in Weimar Classicism and the grand narratives of American Transcendentalism to the 21st century climate change novel. It explores how classical concepts of aesthetic experience and the functions of art re-emerge in contemporary nature writing and environmental fiction. Using analytical concepts and methods of narratology, we will explore and compare forms and functions of narrative design in two novels and one memoir, Moby-Dick (Herman Melville), H is for Hawk (Helen Macdonald) and The Overstory (Richard Powers). Combining analytical, symptomatic and ”deep” readings (Rita Felski), we will then discuss key concerns of current literary theory such as the fact-fiction-divide, ecocriticism, multimodality and generic hybridity in an attempt to come to terms with changing literary representations of (wo)man-nature-relationships.

Literatur

We will use the following print editions (no e-books!):

Herman Melville, Moby-Dick (Third Norton Critical Edition, ed. Hershel Parker), Norton 2017.

Richard Powers, The Overstory, Norton 2016.

Helen Macdonald, H is for Hawk, Vintage Books 2014.

In addition, you may need your Norton Anthologies (GLS A and GLS B).

Bemerkung

The seminar will be a phone-free space; using cases provided by Yondr, we will create an environment that helps us focus on fiction, theory and the art of reading (https://www.overyondr.com/).

Deadline for academic papers: March 31, 2020.
