The lecture offers an overview of the major phonological, morphological and syntactic developments which the English language underwent from the beginning of its recorded history until the present day. It covers the three major periods, i.e. Old English, Middle English and Early Modern English, focusing on the factors, both internal and socio-economic, which conditioned the changes in the individual stages. The topics adressed in the course include, among others, the emergence and the position of English in the wider context of Indo-European languages, the Middle English dialectal variation, the impact of the printing press, the effects of the Renaissance on the language, and the rise of standard English. Additionally, the course introduces the general principles of language change, its types and conditioning factors.
Registration: via "WUSEL" during the official registration period.
