This is a language course with a cultural studies theme. We will explore some of the historical, cultural, social and political factors which have contributed to Ireland and the United Kingdom (UK) being the way they are today. Focussing on the development of ”British” and ”Irish” identities, class, gender, religion, and relationships with Europe, we will examine, debate and discuss issues such as British imperialism, the Northern Irish ‘Troubles’, the political systems of the UK and Ireland, the modernisation of Ireland, Thatcherism, social and political movements (such as the miners’ strike, the gay rights movement and the anti-nuclear movement, including the peace camp at Greenham Common), emigration and immigration, multiculturalism, housing, health care, the response to climate change, and the role of the media in relation to politics, culture and society.
Registration: Via WUSEL during the official registration period.
First meeting: Please note that if you are not present at the first meeting and do not inform me immediately, you will lose your right to a place in the course.
