This is a seminar for BA-students only.
The term intonation refers to the systematic, linguistically relevant aspects of the variation of the pitch of the voice and of the distribution of stressed and unstressed syllables in spoken utterances. Consider, for instance, spoken realisations of the following short dialogues:
(1) A: I heard she insulted them.
B: No. He did.
(2) A: I heard Mary and John didn't pay you.
B:He did. But she didn't.
(3) A: I heard John insulted you
B: He did. But I don't mind.
The sentence He did would have to be uttered with strikingly different patterns of stress and pitch contour in these three cases; that is, an intonation which is appropriate for the utterance of He did in one dialogue would be inappropriate in the other two dialogues. This seminar provides an overview of the facts of intonation in English and an introduction to the theoretical concepts needed for describing and explaining them. For a large part of the seminar, we will be working with Wells (2006) (see below), which participants must have to hand before the start of the seminar.
