In this seminar we will discuss how narrative texts of the 19th-century reflected, negotiated, criticized and helped establish innovative political economies in the United Kingdom. We'll analyse and interpret tales by Harriet Martineau, Dickens's Great Expectations and Trollope's The Way We Live Now. We will ask ourselves why these texts are "trending" in recent years (see A. Gopnik's article "Trollope Trending" in The New Yorker). The narrative texts will be situated in the context of 19th-century and 21st-century theories about debts, credit and capitalism (e.g. by Karl Marx, Giovanni Arrighi, Lauren Berlant).

Please buy the books listed below. Read them thoroughly and with the analytical concepts of the Introduction to Literary Studies in mind. Make notes while reading. Be advised that Dickens's and Trollope's books are voluminous (but fascinating and entertaining) Victorian novels. Great Expectations must be read from the first to the last page (incl. the two alternative endings). You'll read about 3/4 of Trollope's The Way We Live Now - start with volume I.

Intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der von der Lehrperson benannten Primär- und Sekundärliteratur, nachgewiesen durch aktive und regelmäßige Mitarbeit in der Lehrveranstaltung und Moodle-Forumsbeiträge oder alternativ durch von der Lehrperson festzulegende Ersatzleistungen wie z.B. Klausur oder mündliche Prüfung. Abhängig von der Prüfungsordnung und der zu erwerbenden Anzahl der Leistungspunkte zusätzlich eine Auswahl aus den folgenden Leistungsnachweisen: Referat, Exzerpt, Mitarbeit in einem Expertenteam, Lexikonartikel, wissenschaftliche Hausarbeit. |
