Present-tense narration has recently been gaining increasing popularity within the landscapes of both mainstream and literary fiction. This development has occurred somewhat to the amazement of literary critics, for the present-tense novel seems to defy our traditional understanding of narrative: Storytelling is only possible in retrospect and surely therefore requires deployment of the past tense. The present tense, however, is predominantly associated with other discourse modes such as description or explanation. Why, then, do more and more authors draw on this seemingly 'anti-narrative' tense? What are the specific characteristics of present-tense narrative which invest it with such appeal to contemporary writers? Which narrative, aesthetic, and dramaturgical possibilities does it facilitate? In this seminar, we will discuss the question concerning the literary potential of present-tense narration in contemporary narrative fiction. By analyzing and interpreting Nadeem Aslam's Maps for Lost Lovers (2004) and Ian McEwan's Nutshell (2016) from different theoretical perspectives (i.e. narratology, cognitive studies, and linguistics), we will investigate not only different types of present-tense usage in narrative texts, but also explore the different ways of storytelling this specific tense offers to the genre of narrative.

Participants are expected to be thoroughly familiar with the core concepts and terminologies of narrative theory (as provided by the CI Introduction to English and American literature; please re-read the narrative section in the textbook). Besides, participants are required to have read the novel Maps for Lost Lovers by the first meeting of this course.
