Shakespeare, one might assume, needs no introduction. Chances are that even people who don’t go to the theatre or read plays will be able to quote the line from Hamlet, probably the most famous tragedy in history: „To be or not to be“. But how does the soliloquy continue? What, for that matter, is a soliloquy? Why is it such a key element in Shakespeare’s plays? What exactly is troubling Hamlet in this scene? And why do literary scholars and theatrical companies, after more than 400 years, still offer new interpretations? This seminar will start by exploring Hamlet as a typical example of Shakespeare’s sophisticated playwrighting, and then move on to discuss Macbeth and King Lear. Using a multi-method approach to understanding Shakespeare, we will access these plays from a variety of angles, including linguistic theories, New Historicism and gender studies. We will also add several sonnets to the reading list, as well as extracts from Henry V and Twelfth Night. The course includes an excursion to Cologne, where we will watch a contemporary production of Hamlet.

Requirements: Students are expected to own a copy of the following anthology: Norton Shakespeare: Tragedies (1st or 2nd edition), ed. Stephen Greenblatt et al. (no e-books or photocopies). You must have completed reading Hamlet and Macbeth by the second meeting (short exam). |

Unbenotete Studienleistung (2LP): Intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der von der Lehrperson benannten Primär- und Sekundärliteratur, nachgewiesen durch aktive und regelmäßige Mitarbeit in der Lehrveranstaltung oder durch von der Lehrperson festzulegende Ersatzleistungen wie z.B. Klausur oder mündliche Prüfung.
Leistungsbescheinigung: Abhängig von der Prüfungsordnung und der zu erwerbenden Anzahl der Leistungspunkte zusätzlich eine Auswahl aus den folgenden Leistungsnachweisen: Referat, Essay, wissenschaftliche Hausarbeit. |
