Bi- and multilingual education has become more and more popular in today’s globalised world and takes place in various ways (first and second language acquisition, ”Bilingualer Sachfachunterricht”, Immersion, Content and Language Integrated Learning, bilingual modules).
This course aims at exploring different approaches to bilingual teaching.
Students will get to know about different approaches to language acquisition and bilingual education and we will take a closer look at research findings, theories and current developments. Further questions to be dealt with include:
What does language learning/ teaching look like in other countries? What are the advantages and disadvantages of people who grow up bilingually? To what extent does bilingual teaching influence integrating non-native speakers at schools?
Topical research data and practical approaches will be discussed and reflected upon as well as the advantages and disadvantages of different models of bilingual education will be questioned reasonably.
Furthermore, students are asked to examine the actual mode of teaching bilingually and compare it with aspects of curricula and the material currently available for schools.
