Testing, evaluating, grading, examining, feedbacking… teachers slowly but surely develop into testimaniacs as everything seems to revolve around assessment of one kind or another, which of course also exerts a considerable influence on the language classroom. On the one hand, there is a considerable number of large-scale assessment programmes such as PISA, DESI, Lernstand 8, Zentrale Abschlussprüfungen Klasse 10, VERA 6/8; on the other hand, there are ”regular” exams and tests, presentations, portfolios, projects and, last but not least, students’ oral performance, which are all more or less part of a daily assessment marathon.
In this seminar, we are going to take the bull by the horns and approach the above topic on different levels: Test theory, academic research on assessment practices, curricular requirements and guidelines as well as practical issues and survival tips are all going to play a pivotal role in our seminar. In addition, we will also immerse ourselves into assessment procedures by designing, marking and evaluating real-world tests to render our approach truly multi-faceted.
