In this seminar, we will take a critical look at research on language learning and, in particular, research methods regularly employed in the EFL classroom. Major aspects to be covered include
- first research ideas and gaps in existing research,
- formulation of appropriate research questions,
- theoretical considerations concerning appropriate research methods and their (dis-)advantages, data collection techniques, etc. (ideal conditions, aka ”a researcher’s dream world”),
- practical considerations and limitations (aka ”the real world”),
- data analysis and interpretation.
Apart from theoretical articles on research methods, we will also concern ourselves with articles on language learning research. By the end of the seminar, you will have improved your evaluative competence allowing you to critically appraise language learning research on a more advanced level. It goes without saying that this provides a good basis for research that you might want to conduct in the context of an MA or PhD thesis (in the area of English in general and education/TEFL in particular).
