This lecture series presents a history African American literature and culture. It sketches the contributions of black Americans against the background of a society often enough utterly hostile to their very existence. We will shed light on important historical events and developments from the Middle Passage to the Obama administration, and see how seminal literary texts, pop songs and movies can help us understand what W.E.B. DuBois has called the problem of the color line.
