When asked to characterize her work, the feminist narratologist Susan Lanser recently summed up the core of literary and cultural studies in just two words: reading form. The focus on form, of course, goes hand in hand with the belief that form not only mirrors or reveals, but actively produces content. Nowhere can this be seen more clearly than in the current debates on fake news, alternative narratives and post-truth cultures. This lecture will explore the consequences of recent developments in communication design, social networking and strategic storytelling across media. We will use the conceptual tools developed by narratology, discourse theory and media studies to identify, analyse and criticize political propaganda and hate speech. The goals are to understand the significant changes in public discourse that can be observed in Britain, the USA and elsewhere, to reconsider established notions of political correctness and affirmative action, and to discuss intellectual responsibilities in a post-truth world.
