In this seminar, we will investigate cultural adaptations and appropriations of Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous detective stories. We will start out with a selection of Sherlock Holmes-stories (e.g. A Study in Scarlet, "A Scandal in Bohemia") and will analyse them in the cultural context of the Fin de Siècle, drawing on masculinity studies, aestheticism as well as the literary history of detective fiction. We will then go on to investigate processes of adaptation in changing historical and socio-economic circumstances. We will compare the adaptational strategies in the political climate of the 1940s and of the 1980s, explore the burgeoning heritage industry and the changes due to the broadcast acts, and analyse current appropriations of the detective in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes-movies (2009, 2011) as well as in the BBC-series Sherlock. We will finish with Bill Condon’s Mr Holmes (2015).
