The seminar offers an overview of regionally distinct features of English accents and dialects. It focuses specifically on the diachronic lines that connect present-day dialectal features with older stages of the development of English. Some of the questions addressed will include: how old are various characteristics of English accents? when and where did they arise? to what extent were the features currently considered typical of marginal dialects once present in the prestigious varieties of English? It will be demonstrated that accents and dialects are a dynamic phenomenon rather than a static expression of “rural backwardness”. The seminar will also examine specific features of overseas English(es) and their relation to and placement among the varieties of English, as well as cover some theoretical issues of regional variation, such as the methods applied in charting regional dialect patterns.
