The same way that sentences have a hierarchical syntactic structure, they also have a hierarchical prosodic structure, made up of prosodic constituents. This seminar introduces and motivates the different prosodic constituents. At the word level we find syllables and feet, which are responsible for stress and rhythm in words. At the sentential level we find prosodic words, prosodic phrases and intonation phrases, which are responsible for phrasal stress and rhythm as well as the shape of tunes (i.e. intonation or speech melody). Further topics to be discussed are:
1. the correspondence between morphosyntactic constituents (e.g. nouns, noun phrases and clauses) and the prosodic constituents to be established
2. rules for word and phrasal stress
3. how intonation can be modelled in the grammar
4. how intonation encodes the information structure of sentences (i.e. the division of sentences into new and old information)
