This class is a continuation (Part II) of last semester’s Preparing for Bilingual Studies Abroad and consists of the placement itself, either in category C schools in Wales or in primary and secondary schools in England. Living in an English-speaking country and working in a bilingual school gives students the opportunity to gain insight into the methods employed in the (early) teaching of a second language. Participating students also derive great benefit from assisting experienced teachers in all other classes in which English is the medium of communication (e.g. history, geography, PE). The placement gives students the chance to carry out their own enquiry projects based on the theories of bilingualism, bilingual education, and concept formation. Having reflected upon the individual elements of teaching methods they have observed in the course of their Welsh and English placements, the students then evaluate the applicability of what they have experienced to their own future practices as teachers of a foreign language.
