The term ”popular culture” is often used as a synonym for ”everyday culture”. As such, popular culture includes all cultural artifacts we encounter in our everyday existence: from the poster ads at the bus stop to the daily soaps in the evening. TV series like How I met your Mother, video games like Battlefield Hardline or ad campaigns by, for instance, Coca-Cola suggest certain identity models through the use of particular plot elements and character types. Children and young adolescents in particular are specifically prone to the influence of such omnipresent narratives of popular culture and the identity patterns they suggest through narration. In this project-based course, we will exploit the didactic potential of popcultural media and texts. Products to be developed in this project-based course are pre-viewing and while viewing tasks as well as teaching scenarios for particular texts and media. Reference to curricular expectations will also guide the task design. All teaching materials produced in this course will be made available via a website for future reference, use and discussion with in-service teachers.
This project-based course connects with the following courses: K-BIL 3, Spezielle Bildungswissenschaften, Aufbaumodul Literaturwissenschaften (Kombi BA, C2) and Planning and Analysing Classroom Processes (Master of Education).
If taken in the Master of Education, teaching materials from this course should be tried out during the ”Praxissemester” at school and can become basis for a Studien- and/or Unterrichtsprojekt.
If taken in the BA, it is recommended that you study K-BIL 3 (”Didaktische Gestaltung computer- und netzbasierter Lernumgebungen”) in the same term.
